WHY HAVE ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?
For patients with crooked or abnormally arranged teeth, which can be associated with oral health risks, braces and orthodontics can be used to align the teeth. Braces also work to eliminate any problems that may be present while eating, speaking or practicing dental hygiene.
WHAT IS INVOLVED?
Traditional braces: Consist of standard metal brackets placed onto the teeth with an adhesive and connected by a wire. Traditional braces require periodic tightening so that steady pressure can gradually shift the teeth and align the jaws.
Invisalign: Invisible braces are a set of clear, removable trays that are a custom fit to your teeth. The trays are worn 20-22 hours per day and require changing as teeth shift.
Myofunctional Orthodontics: Offers a viable alternative to traditional methods. This is a no-braces treatment focused on muscle dysfunction and aiming to achieve a better and healthier long-term result.
WHEN TO START?
All adult teeth have erupted, on average, at around 13 years; this is when most orthodontic treatment commences. Though traditional braces and Invisalign can be used at any age, Myofunctional orthodontic treatment begins much younger, from around age 6.
Traditional braces: $6000-$8000
Invisalign: $3500 per arch
Myofunctional Orthodontics: $2500
WHAT COMMON CHANGES SHOULD I BE AWARE OF?
Appearance: many individuals may find they feel self-conscious due to the change in appearance. However, orthodontic treatment is common and many people wear braces. Some youth select bold colours to display with pride.
Speech: may be slightly impaired/more difficult within the first few days of treatment while the individual adjusts to the new feeling.
Chewing: while individuals adjust, chewing may be more difficult. In order to ease this, cut food into smaller portions; place only a small portion into the mouth at a time; chew slowly and avoid sticky, chewy or hard textures that may dislodge brackets, get stuck or break the wires.
Tenderness and sore spots: may develop occasionally, though usually only following the initial treatment or an adjustment. Minor sore spots tend to heal within a day or so while the use of orthodontic wax and warm, salt-water mouth rinses may help.
